Volunteering for the Arts
By Mary Newman
On September 28, the Women Law-
yers’ Committee hosted a lunch panel
called “Step Up, Listen In and Support
the Arts.” Leaders from the Playhouse in
the Park, the Cincinnati Symphony, the
Ensemble Theatre, the Cincinnati Ballet
and the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company
shared their experiences and thoughts on
the interplay between Cincinnati’s vibrant
arts scene and the local legal community.
The idea behind such a lunch panel
grew out of my own experience during
law school, when I worked as a summer
clerk at Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts of
Massachusetts. One of many similar or-
ganizations across the country, we helped
low-income artists and arts organiza-
tions find pro bono legal help from local
volunteer lawyers who were interested in
supporting the arts.
After practicing in New York City for
several years, I moved back to my home-
town of Cincinnati in the summer of 2011
and joined Dinsmore & Shohl. One of the
things that struck me when I returned
to Cincinnati was our first class cultural
institutions and incredible variety of arts,
especially for a city of our size. It seems to
me that a Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts
organization would be a perfect fit for
Cincinnati.
Based on the response of our panelists
and attendees, I’m not alone in seeing a
great opportunity for Cincinnati’s lawyers
to support our artists. When I reached out
to ArtsWave, the prominent arts fund-
ing organization, they jumped on board
immediately and hosted a follow-up lun-
cheon for interested attorneys to continue
exploring how the legal and arts commu-
nities interact.
The result of these meetings is a small
group of attorneys working with the Cin-
cinnati Bar Association and Arts Wave to
create an organization
through which local
lawyers will donate pro
bono time to meet the
legal needs of low-
income artists and arts organizations. The
Women Lawyers Committee has been a
key sponsor of our efforts, but our group
is open to all members of the Bar Associa-
tion. I’m so grateful to everyone who has
expressed support and interest so far, and
I expect you’ll be hearing more from us in
the future!
