Gerhardstein and Branch LGBT Legal Advocacy Award

On June 23, the CBA LGBT Interests Group held a half-day CLE program and celebrated LGBT Pride Month. The committee recognized Bob and Kathy Laufman with the 2017 Gerhardstein and Branch LGBT Legal Advocacy Award. The Laufmans were recognized for more than 40 years of service as advocates for the Cincinnati LGBT community. In 1972, Bob took on and won the first transgender rights case in Cincinnati when he agreed to represent clients who had been denied amended birth certificates. After starting his own civil rights practice in the early 1970s, he became the go-to civil rights attorney in Cincinnati. He and his colleagues worked on countless cases including challenging the 1993 city charter amendment barring protections for LGBT people. In 2004, Bob retired from full-time practice. A social worker by training, Kathy started with GLSEN in 1995 working tirelessly on improving the school environment for LGBT youth. In 2013, her work and dedication helped lead Cincinnati Public Schools to adopt GLSEN-suggested language for its anti-bullying policy. Congratulations to Bob and Kathy Laufman for their ongoing support of the LGBT community.
