July-August CBA Report

legal community news Statewide Changes for Ohio Notaries are Coming The new legislation, effective Sept. 20, 2019, standardizes the require- ments to become a notary in Ohio, and centralizes the administration of the process to the Ohio Secretary of State. Non-lawyer notaries will be required to complete a criminal back- ground check, a training component and a test to obtain a Notary Commis- sion in Ohio. New lawyers admitted after the effective date of the bill will be required to undergo training, but no testing, to receive a permanent notary commission. Lawyers who have not obtained their notary commission will also be required to undergo training after Sept. 20, 2019. The new legislation has no impact on existing lawyer-notaries. For non-lawyer notaries, if your notary commission expires in 2019, the requirements are changing. You may want to renew your commission now. Renewal application forms can be downloaded at www.cincybar.org or contact the notary department at the CBA at (513) 381-8213. The CBA will be accepting new and renewal applications through Aug. 15, 2019. Upcoming test dates are July 10, 2019 and Aug. 7, 2019. Contact the notary department at the CBA at (513) 381-8213 or download applications at www.cincybar.org. The new legislation also provides a process to become an e-Notary after Sept. 20, 2019. Stay tuned for more details on that process. Welcome New Members The CBA Board of Trustees has approved the following for membership: Matthew M.
