“Judge Nathaniel Jones occupied an irreplaceable role in my and my wife Francie’s life. His influence on my son David, for whom David had the privilege of clerking, will mark his life forever.
I’ve had the privilege of knowing many great men and women in my life. Judge Jones was and remains a singular example of unflinching integrity, courage, stamina, decency and kindness. His respect for the dignity of every individual was ever present and palpable.
He lived as full a life as a person ever could. No one could have done more.
Judge Jones meant the world to the creation and continuation of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. He was there at the beginning, 25 years ago, at the very formation of the concept and mission. He served on the board to the end. When Judge Jones walked into the room, the place seemed to brighten. You knew that if there was a tough pivotal discussion on what was the right thing to do, the Judge would speak up, gently but ever so firmly, and we would listen carefully and we would be the better for it.
I urge everyone to visit the Freedom Center to view the magnificent sculpture of Judge Jones which has recently been installed on the second floor. It captures the wisdom and thoughtfulness of this unique jurist and human being who will occupy an indelible place in our memory, always.”
— John Pepper, Former CEO/Chair, Procter & Gamble, Nat’l Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Walt Disney Co.
Judge Nathaniel R. Jones’ office at Blank Rome, looking over the Federal Courthouse, is full of his notes, books, photographs, and mementos.
