8 THE REPORT | | November/December 2023 | | CincyBar org Emotional resilience is is is is the the the ability to to to to adapt to to to to stressful situ- ations or negative experiences in in in a a a a a a a a a a a a a a positive way and it it it it it is is is critical to to being a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a good lawyer lawyer lawyer If an an opposing lawyer lawyer lawyer is is disrespectful to to you you you do do you you you snap at the the lawyer lawyer lawyer or or do do you you you act in in in a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a calm manner? If a a a a a a a a a a a a colleague or or or a a a a a a a a a a a a member of the the public criticizes you you you you you do do you you you you you get defensive or or or or are you you you you you deliberate in in your response or or or or do do you you you you you just let it go? Most lawyers were never formally trained in in in in being aware of our own or or or others’ emotions and and feelings We are are taught to to to look at at at facts study the the the law law and and develop conclusions But being able able to to to to to relate to to to to to others is a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a key trait that lawyers need need in in in in all aspects of their their careers Lawyers need need to to to to be be able able to to to to under- stand others’ feelings and and put themselves in in in their their shoes at times Lawyers need to to to learn how how to to to work with others others who are angry frustrated and stressed Learning how how to to to to manage emotions in in times of high stress stress is is crucial to to to a a a a a a a a a lawyer’s success Being able to to to recognize your your emotions is is the first step in in in improving your your emotional resilience Take some time to to honestly reflect on on on on on how you you deal with negative negative situations such as being wrongly accused of something getting negative negative feedback or or comforting a a a a a a a a a a colleague who is upset Once you you you start identifying your emotions you you you can learn how to deal with them in in in a a a a a a a a posi- tive manner If you you you you find yourself fin in in a a a a a a a negative situation try telling your- self self some of these phrases and you you you you will be more prepared to get through stressful experiences By Scott R Mote Esq “I will get through this ”
If you you you are on the the fifth day of o of trying a a a a a high-profile murder case that that shows disturbing images of o of the the victim you you you might tell your- self that that it it is is is nearly impossible to withstand this Your emotions are are at at at an an an an all-time high and and and you you you you feel for the the victim and and and the the family If you you you you you are are are emotionally resilient you you you you you will will know that you you you you you will will get through this even if you you you you are are uncomfortable and and uneasy with the the the situation You know that that the the the the past cannot be changed and and that that the the the the feelings of of the the the the family are out of of your control There is nothing you you can do to take away their pain “I will not be a victim ”
You have a a a a a a a a a a a a a a case that has attracted media media and and and social justice warriors’ scrutiny and and and you are pilloried by the the media media and and and protesters The politicians camp outside the the courthouse with cameras and and and microphones everywhere You will probably be angry and and and anxious and and and might think to to to yourself “Of course this is is is is happening to to to me me me The media is is is is going to to to label me me me as a a a a a a a a a a monster ”
Emotionally resilient people will not let this experience define them or ruin their future They know that these things happen and they can move on
