WITH
THE
Matt Barnes
ELDER & SPECIAL NEEDS LAW
CHAIR
What did you want to be when you grew up?
A meteorologist because I was really interested in weather.
I watched The Weather Channel every day.
What made you want to be an attorney?
I did a year with AmeriCorps when I graduated from undergrad.
It was my first time working in a non-profit environment and
made me realize I wanted to do something that could help advo-
cate on an individual and policy/legislative level. A public interest
attorney seemed like a good fit for those goals. Helping individual
clients solve their problems while also identifying and working
towards rectifying systemic issues is very fulfilling!
What’s your favorite food and why?
Chicken flautas. My
family started making
them as a Christmas
tradition when I was
young, so I have lots
of happy memories
of making these as a
family, and it takes
the whole family
to make them
timely! Now my
kids help make the
ingredients.
What are you goals for this year as Chair?
Continuing to consistently provide relevant CLE opportuni-
ties and informational meetings on the topic of elder and special
needs law throughout the year by hosting six bi-monthly (usually
on the second Thursday of the month), encouraging members to
offer their ideas for topics by offering food at our annual planning
meeting in November, and encouraging members to join the lead-
ership of the practice group.
Barnes and his
father make
homemade flautas
together.
