Thomas C. Hill
1946 – 2021
Thomas C. Hill passed away at his home in Charlottesville, Virginia on August 21, 2021 at the age of 75.
Tom was born in Prestonsburg, Kentucky in 1946. He graduated from Man High School in Man, West Virginia and went to college at Western Reserve
University in Cleveland. (Tom would always correct you if you said he graduated from Case Western). While at Western Reserve, he met the woman who became his wife, Barbarie. After grad- uating from Western Reserve, Tom and Barbarie married and moved to Chicago for graduate school which was interrupted by two years of alternative service as a conscientious objector.
Tom received his law degree from the University of Chicago and then moved with his young family to Cincinnati, where Tom joined Taft Stettinius & Hollister in 1973. Tom stayed at Taft his entire career, retiring in early 2009. At Taft, Tom specialized in antitrust law and insurance coverage issues. His knowledge of both was encyclopedic. Tom had a wry sense of humor which was always on display, even when explaining a complicated legal issue. He was gracious with his time to his colleagues at Taft, always willing to jump in to help out, even when his own plate was full, and always delivering answers cheerfully and enthusiastically. As one of his partners said upon his passing, Tom “was a true partner in the best meanings of that term.”
Tom was very active in the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), serving in leadership roles in local meetings, as well as the Friends World Committee for Consultation. Tom also served as a trustee at Wilmington College and was a student of Quaker history, creating a database listing various Friends meetings and the location of the records from those meeting houses. (The data- base can still be found at QuakerMeetings.com.).
Tom’s family, and especially his grandchildren, were his pride and joy. Upon retiring from Taft in 2009, Tom and his wife Barbarie relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia to live next door to his youngest son and his family. Tom is survived by his wife Barbarie, his sons Jason (María) Hill, Duncan (Allie) Hill, and grandchildren Caroline, Graham, Julia, and Corinne.
