Lifetime Achievement in Law Award
Louise Roselle, the 2022 recipient of the John L. Muething Lifetime Achievement in Law Award, has dedicated her legal life to helping people.
Louise started as a lawyer when there weren’t many women lawyers. She began her career in 1972 as a staff attorney at the newly formed Ohio Environmental Protection
Agency where she prepared the air pollution control regulations for the State of Ohio and worked on implementation of the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act. She next served as an enforcement attorney at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency enforcing the Clean Air Act in the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, with a primary emphasis on the unleaded gas regulations, and enforcement actions against steel companies.
Louise has worked as legal counsel for Fifth Third Bank (1976- 1981), Reisenfeld & Associates (1981-1986), Waite, Schneider, Bayless & Chesley (1986-2012), Markovits, Stock & DeMarco (2012-2019) and Of Counsel to Biller & Kimble, LLC. (2019-2021).
Louise has tried many jury cases, including both complex litigation and personal injury cases. She has spent more than 30 years litigating environmental cases including Cook v. Rockwell which resulted in a $375 million settlement and the Fernald Resi- dents case which resulted in a $78 million settlement. For more than a decade, Louise was lead counsel in the complex personal injury litigation In re: Hanford which was litigation for residents who were downwind of the Hanford Site in Washington state.
Louise has extensive experience in personal injury cases, including worker intentional tort, automobile collisions, product liability and other negligence issues. Louise enjoys the personal injury cases. It gives her great satisfaction to help clients receive compensation and closure for their losses. Many of the personal injury cases that she has handled have involved the wrongful death of a loved one. Louise also has extensive experience in commercial litigation including antitrust, securities and other liability issues.
In her own words, Louise has this to say about her work as a plaintiff’s personal injury lawyer. “When I begin a case, I try to determine what the client wants to accomplish. Then I work to achieve that goal. I am hardworking and thorough. I carefully collect and review all of the documents relevant to the case and I prepare for and take depositions that are necessary. I find that cooperation with other lawyers is the best way for me to achieve good results. I keep the client fully informed as the case proceeds so that there are no surprises.”
Louise has received several awards and designations, including designations as a “Top Rated Personal Injury Attorney” in Cincin- nati and was selected to Super Lawyers 2010-2018. Louise also received the 2009 Trial Lawyer of the Year award presented by Public Justice for the Rocky Flats litigation.
She is now retired from law firm work, but is not retired as a lawyer. She spends about ten hours a week volunteering for Pro Seniors and is currently serving on the Cincinnati Bar Founda- tion Board.
Louise has participated in and served many civic and legal activities including: the DFAB (Development Finance Advisory Board) for the Ohio Department of Development, from 1991 to 1993, and was appointed to this board by then-Governor Richard Celeste; as a mentor with the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative from 1999 to 2005; the Board of Zoning Appeals for the City of Mont- gomery, Ohio, from 1997 to 2000; the CASA Advisory Board for Clermont County, Ohio from 1998 to 2000; as part of the Lead- ership Cincinnati Class XXVI of 2002-2003; as a member of the Supreme Court of Ohio Commission on Certification of Attor- neys as Specialists, from 2002 to 2008; and with the Northern Kentucky Children’s Law Center Advisory Board for nearly 20 years, from 2000 to 2019.
The CBF congratulates Louise Roselle, the 2022 recipient of the John L. Muething Lifetime Achievement in Law Award, for her many accomplishments.
