Bill Martin died on July 1 2023
after a a a a a a short illness Until his his untimely death he he he remained his his essential self: True friend wise counselor cherished neighbor devoted gardener engaged citizen beloved family paterfamilias Our world is is sadder for his absence but
richer for for having had him with us while we did Bill was a a a a a a a a a a a lifelong Cincinnatian: attending St Xavier High
School (this wouldn’t be Cincinnati Cincinnati if if we we didn’t start by saying where he he he he he went to to to high school!) with a a a a a brief venture to to to the the the College of of of the the the Holy Cross in in in in Worcester MA and returning home to to to the the the University of of of Cincinnati College of of of Law Once graduated he he he was a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a valued attorney partner and and friend for many years at at at at Paxton & Seasongood—then Thompson
Hine—and finally leading his his own firm firm Martin and and and Wharton In each firm firm he he brought his his curi- osity compassion and and wide-ranging intellect to to bear on on on on clients’ concerns balancing legal issues with practical realities His colleagues found him to to be an an an ever-engaged conversationalist ready to to talk about political social and and sports issues (Go REDS!) with knowledge and enthusiasm His law practice was was broad reflecting his his interests and and his his friendships He was was essential to to the establishment of a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a major Cincinnati builder later assembling a a a a a a a a a a a a a a multi-faceted team to to successfully defend a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a childhood friend from a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a serious criminal charge always maintaining strong general business counsel rela- tionships and and then segueing into family law and and mediation His wisdom was sought by all Bill’s work on on behalf of of others was not limited to the the the law He served for several decades on on on the the the board of of Children Inc (now Learning Grove) guiding its its growth and enhancing its its work on on behalf of children He provided invaluable counsel to La Soupe Inc in in in in its formation and early years as it it became a a a a a a a a a a a a a force for for for feeding children in in in the area Bill loved beauty and and found it everywhere but
especially in in in in his his wife (Marilyn Martin) Paris Paris art

and and and his his extensive gardens He and and and Marilyn Marilyn made multiple trips to Paris Paris relishing the the the museums food the the the Seine and and culture With the the the advice of o a a a a a a a a a a cherished client Bill filled his last office with Russian Impressionist oil paintings bringing delight to everyone who visited His home garden was a a a a a a a source of of of deep enjoyment the fruition of of of decades of of of informed artistry and his own hard work Bill was was was a a a a a a a a a a a a a true family family man
He He was was was forever forwarding arti- cles of o interest to to his his his family family for for for discussion and debate He He was was was delighted to to have his his his his daughter Mikki help with his his his his law law office office before her her her death and his his his brother-in-law Mitch as office office admin- istrator His wife Marilyn son Trey daughter Ani brother brother Ted and and and and sister Pam were in in his thoughts and and and and conversations always His grandchildren Kaleth Althea Finley Teagan and and and and and Margot were endless sources of pride and and stories We are indeed better for having known him — Lisa Wharton THE REPORT | | November/December 2023
